big boy haircut
so i've been wanting to trim andrew's hair for awhile now. when he was younger, i would comb it over for church on sunday's and i thought he looked so cute! my little missionary! but lately it started looking like an old man comb-over. my dad helped me trim it after we got back from idaho but it grew out from that pretty quickly.
so on one of our far too many trips to walmart, mason i picked up a set of clippers. i've been wanting a pair for a while to help me with mason's haircuts and we finally got them! anyway... one day last week before the nasty cold/flu took over us, i decided that that night was the night!
we put andrew in the bathtub and mason tried to hold him still while i buzzed. andrew was, of course, more curious about the noise the thing was making so he kept moving his head to try and get a look at it.
mason had to run out a minute but i didn't want to wait so i started on the top. i didn't want to take too much off so i could still comb it or spike it, so i picked the guide that i thought was just a little shorter than his hair. one swoop down the front of his hair and i knew i'd made a mistake! oops!
i looked at the clippers and at all the hair i'd cut off and freaked! my eyes welled up with tears but i was trying not to make a big deal out of it. my pride didn't want to admit that i'd make a mistake. i wanted to act as if i knew what i was doing. stupid pride.
but mason set one foot inside the bathroom again and out it all came!! i bawled like a baby! not necessarily because i goofed up andrew's hair, it looked ok, i was upset that i had cut off all his baby hair. he looked so much older with it short!
and then i started crying even harder to think that andrew is no longer a baby! it's been kind-of a hard reality for me to face. the older he gets, the more that he is capable of doing, i'm excited for him, but part of me wishes that he were still a little baby. i miss those days and it's gone by way too fast!
in the midst of my crying, i noticed that andrew was staring at me curiously. i realized that maybe it wasn't such a good idea for the hair cutter to start crying and pointing right in the middle of a haircut! then we all had a good laugh about that and i felt a little better.
it's still way too short for my liking. he looks like he's about to enlist in the army or something. mason said it's back to the length when he was a baby. but it's different. i know it will grow and i'll get it back to where i like it.
i'm keeping the locks of hair from the clippers. this is the most i've ever cut off at one time! i'll put it in his baby book that i have yet to start/finish. and i decided that no matter how old he gets or what he says, he'll always be my baby!

There is something that changes after that first big boy haircut - the baby is gone & there is sadness. Just enjoy every minute, because way too soon he'll be coming home from a trip to the temple to tell you about a conversation he had with the boys in the car about 'girls'!
I love the T-shirt! Babies grow up too fast. I had many moments like that with Hayley. But growing up has some perks, too. I really enjoy talking to Hayley and doing crafts with her. But I miss Hayley and Chloe's baby days, too. Its true, nothing crueler than the passing of time.
My Grandma Pearce used to recite her sadness of her boys first haircuts. She missed their long curls. I've also read many biographies share other mothers' similar feelings. I thought it funny & kind of strange to hear about mothers missing their boys long hair...until I cried for days after I first cut Noah's long curls off. It still haunts me today and yet I'm happy he has short hair now:) I feel your pain! :)
he looks handsome. and I know what you mean about the bittersweet-ness of growing up!
(p.s. we have the same shirt... hilarious)
