what a long strange trip it's been

for some reason, i had "what a long strange trip it's been" in my head when i was in labor with connor. at one point, i mentioned that to my midwife and she laughed. but at that point, i didn't know the half of it!

starting with strict bed rest in january, or maybe it was even when mason got laid off in november, we seem to be on a string of bad luck or something. did anyone break a mirror? i didn't!

this post isn't to feel sorry for ourselves but to rather laugh at all the unexpected that has happened to us in the past few months. granted there have been days when i've not been laughing, not laughing at all. but i would rather laugh at my problems than cry about them so here goes...

january 22: started showing signs of preterm labor at 32 weeks. spent weekend in the hospital getting an assortment of not fun drugs in an effort to stop it.

january 26 - february 16: strict bed rest. mason brought a mattress and box spring upstairs to the living room so i could watch movies and still be with the family. my mom came and took andrew back to craig. in many respects that was the most difficult 3 weeks of my life but now i only wish i could lay down all the time.

february 16th: my birthday!! and my first official day off of bed rest. i celebrated with a haircut and an all-you-can-eat buffet lunch but i was too uncomfortable to eat much.

february 22: was awakened by what i thought was my water breaking, but it wasn't... sometime i'll tell that story. but i was able to do a VBAC although i kind-of wish i hadn't... the jury's still out on that one. connor was born at 1:47 that afternoon. he was healthy and perfect so life was good!

february 26: to the hospital for blood work because connor was too sleepy to eat due to jaundice but levels aren't high enough for treatment.

1st week in march: not a good week. hormone levels have plummeted at this point and i'm feeling more anxious that ever before. at one point i'm too afraid to walk down the stairs with connor because i'm scared i'll fall and drop him. go to midwifes, get anti-anxiety pills, things start getting better.

march 15: connor's due date

march 21: our accord dies on the interstate as mason and andrew are coming home from church. mason fights with it but was finally able to get it home. we haven't tried to start it since... we'd better get to that.

march 27: mason goes down to the basement to get something out of the deep freeze only to learn that the freezer has died. thankfully, everything's still frozen! emergency trip to sears to buy a new freezer, they can't deliver until friday (6 days away), spend a small fortune on dry ice the next week keeping everything frozen. but we didn't lose anything!! blessings in the midst of trials!

march 29: another blood clot

march 30: after a rough weekend, finally get connor into the doctor to get diagnosed with reflux. they prescribe medication but we can't fill it because of pre-authorization blah, blah, blah...
same day, i go to get an ultrasound and find out that i still have some membranes you know where so they have to do an d&c later in the week.

april 1: d&c. i tell the surgeon not to pull any april fools jokes on me. wake up from surgery feeling much better!!

april 9: finally get connor's reflux prescription filled!!

april 17th: rush connor to the ER because his breathing is labored and quick. spend the night. have enlarged heart scare but all is well. well, except for his terrible reflux and a mild case of RSV. mason is fighting the flu or some bug. more medicine for connor.

april 22: get all clear for connor's heart from the 2nd EKG! breathe a sign of relief and say a prayer of gratitude! dr says to try expensive formula for connor's reflux.

april 23: mastitis.

it has been a difficult few months for us. but we're being blessed even as we are being tried and i'm so thankful for that. and as always, it could get worse so i'll count my blessings rather than grumble about my challenges. something i've realized through all this though, is that it is possible to be happy even when things are the most difficult.

the end... i hope.

good grief! to see it chronicled like that is a sight to see! you and mason are the best and you show much strength of character to have been through all this and to still laugh and be above it. know you are loved :)

One of my fav. scriptures is in D&C 24:8 Be patient in afflictions, for thou shalt have many; but endure them, for, lo, I am with thee, even unto the end of thy days. Hang in there! If you need anything I'm only a phone call away and a 20 min drive.

Sorry about your string of bad luck. It must be something about the second child, because Chloe's premature birth and heart problems sent us in to a tailspin too. It took a few years before I felt like everything was normal again. It strengthened each individually and as a couple. So hang in there, in a few weeks you'll be down in here on vacation. If you want we can keep the boys so you and Mason can have some couple time.

Well, even if you did break a mirror, here's hoping all of your bad luck is done for the next 7 years! I really admire your positive attitude about everything. You go girl!
