a day at miller farm

earlier this week, andrew and i met a bunch of friends down in platteville at the miller farm. i'd never been there before but i was so excited about it! it's a CSA farm that also lets the public in to pick vegetables at their fall festival. we had a large group so we got in for $10 a person and were able to pick up to 60 lbs of produce! it was great!

they had so much fun stuff for the kids to do... we weren't able to explore even half of it. but what andrew was able to play on in a short amount of time, he loved!

i wish i would have got more pics but i needed a couple more arms... anyway, they had hay rides pulled by tractors that took us around the fields to pick all the veggies. i didn't end up getting 60 lbs of produce, there was some confusion as to how many stops there were so in an effort to not get too much too soon and not have enough room, i was being cautious and thus ended up not quite getting enough. which actually might have been a blessing because we really don't have too much time right now to process a bunch of food. a lot of the stuff i got we can eat pretty quickly and then the other stuff will store well. so it all worked out! :)


i tried to get a couple pics at the end to show how dirty andrew got but the pics don't really do it justice. needless to say, i stripped him down before putting him in the car. andrew was really good and was such a trooper. it was hot, i left one water bottle in the car so we were short on water and i really couldn't pay too much attention to him since i was trying to pick veggies but overall he was really good.



we had one experience that still makes my heart swell when i think about it. at one point i was trying to pick out a pumpkin but i didn't have much time and i was trying to hurry. by then we were all hot and tired. i was hoping that andrew would stay by the wagon with some of the other kids and play but he started following me over to the pumpkin patch. the good pumpkins were quite a ways into the patch and at first i thought i wanted to get a big one. more bang for your buck you know! anyway... i took off into the pumpkin patch with andrew still trying to follow me a ways behind. i was also trying to hurry because i knew that andrew had a hard time walking in the deep beds of the fields because of his short legs and i was worried he would fall and get upset but i couldn't find a good pumpkin anywhere. finally i just grabbed a decent one and then headed back toward andrew. the foliage was so thick that i couldn't see him and there was a lot of activity so i couldn't hear if he was upset or not. i was worried that he would think i had left him or something. i pictured him sobbing in a dirty rut of the field thinking his momma had deserted him! but finally i found him and there he was still making his way toward me. as i walked toward him, he didn't notice me yet since i was still quite a distance from him but i noticed that he fell about every two steps or so just because the ruts were so big between the rows. but he kept coming anyway! every time he fell he just picked himself back up and started up again. i called his name and he looked up and smiled! my heart about jumped out of my chest with joy and love for this little boy. but of course i am pregnant so maybe i'm a tad over emotional. anyway... he was excited about the pumpkin and tried to carry it back but it was too heavy for him. finally he looked up at me and said, "carry you!" which means that he wants to be carried and we walked back together towards the wagon.

our day at the farm was an experience and an adventure to say the least. but even though we came home exhausted and dirty, we had a great time! i can't wait until next year! :)
